This week I had the opportunity to impart some of my knowledge to an inspiring photographer who was interested in my particular style and also the aspect of engaging with the subject and the equipment.
Most of my recent photography has been inspired by many great photographers, namely David Hobby “Strobist” who has accomplished many stunning images from one light source. One piece of advice is learn your equipment and learn it well. A good friend of mine Donal McCann told me in the very early days of my photography to read my manual, to which I laughed and said, “Who reads that..” I soon realised how wrong I was and of course read it cover to cover.
The image above is simply one speedlight diffused through an umbrella. By exposing for the sky this allows you to retain detail thus adding a bit of fill light onto the subject to allow separation.
